Book of the week

The Shining by Stephen King - Nobody does scary quite like Stephen King, and readers across the board agree The Shining takes the cake. If there's one book to stick your nose into to get just the right amount of creeped out this weekend, you'll want to pick this one.

Articles worth the read

  • Believe it or not, there are voice artists out there getting paid to scream. Yep, it's this talent of theirs that makes scary movies so scary, and those screams so piercing. It's an art form with a unique history and world of its own. Learn more about the cinematic screams in this NYT article.
  • Some people really like to go all out for Halloween, either with their costumes, parties, or home decorations. One man in Dallas, though, has cops continuously knocking on his door because his decorations are that creepy. Check out this hilarious story here.

What to watch

  • Atticus Freeman embarks on a journey through 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. Joined by his friend Letitia and Uncle George, the trio must do everything they can to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. Watch Lovecraft Country on HBO Max.
  • Pumpkin King Jack Skellington has made a name for himself in Halloween Town. But for some reason, this year he's pretty bored with the same-old scare routine. As fate would have it, he accidentally lands in Christmas Town, and tries to do his best to bring the Christmas cheer back to his home town. Watch The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) on Disney+.
  • Three 300-year old witches are on a mission to cast a spell on the town to reclaim their youth. But before they can do that, they have to outsmart a few neighborhood pranksters and a talking cat. Watch Hocus Pocus (1993) on Disney+.

And finally, a quote to keep in mind throughout the week

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. And spiders.” ― Unknown
