Greyscalegorilla Founder - Part One

His website, Greyscalegorilla, not only sells suites to help you make better work, it also provides invaluable educational content. After meeting at NAB in Las Vegas, Nevada this year, Chris had to sit down with Nick and talk more about his history, how Greyscalegorilla came to be, and what the future of online education might look like. This is part one of a two part series.

Greyscalegorilla is on a mission to make motion designers’s jobs easier and speed up workflow. They started as a training site where motion designers could learn about Cinema 4D, and other motion design software. Today, they have tens of thousands of customers that buy their plugins, products, animation tools, training, and more, all to help them become better motion designers. Greyscalegorilla helps their customers get what’s in their heads out onto the screen to be able to do their best work, get more customers, and charge clients more money.

The site actually started as a photo-a-day blog when Nick was practicing photography, back when digital cameras were the new thing. (We’ll let you figure out how long ago that was.) Then, his website started to gain traction. People were asking what gear he was using, and wanted to learn more about his process.

He started blogging and creating video tutorials to help website visitors learn more about photo gear and photography in general. These topics then shifted to program topics, like After Effects, Photoshop, and eventually, Cinema 4D. Before he knew it, Nick was teaching people online how to use these different technologies and amassing followers in the process.

It’s the mid-2000s, and the term ‘passive income’ is just starting to come to light. Nick was intrigued in starting his own business, and finding ways to earn a passive income himself. Much to his surprise, Nick was lucky to learn early on that he could make a living doing what he loved and what he did well. He did it all without trading his time for a dollar. How’d he do it? You’ll just have to tune in to find out.
